Much is said about the power of positive thinking, but how does staying positive actually help in day-to-day life? To find out, Comfort conducted a survey of 2,000 British women aged 18 to 40 to get their views on the power of positivity.
What Is Positivity?
Positivity can be hard to define. Is it just thinking happy thoughts, or is there more to it? When asked to sum up the meaning of positivity, 32% of respondents described it as an attitude. 21% said that positivity is a mentality, and 11% defined it as a choice.
The survey found that British women are a positive bunch, with a whopping 93% of respondents describing themselves as positive at least some of the time.
Having a positive mental attitude means smiling at your challenges, trying your best whenever possible and keeping those around you happy.
How Do I Stay Positive?
Maintaining an upbeat outlook on life isn’t always easy. We asked our survey respondents what advice they had about keeping positive.
Two fifths of the women surveyed (39%) said that the key to keeping positive is to believe in yourself. This may seem straightforward but it’s true: having faith in yourself and your abilities is one of the most important steps we take towards facing life’s challenges.
The second most popular piece of advice was to stop comparing yourself to others. Three out of every 10 women agreed on this point. Instead, you should count your blessings, at least that’s what 20.7% of respondents think. Taking the time to assess all the good things going on in your life is a great way to be positive. In fact, almost half of respondents felt the practise of ‘positive thinking’ was a helpful way to keep positive.
Sometimes all it takes to put a smile on your face is a small reminder of what you have to be thankful for.
A Positive Connection
Positivity had a strong link to human connectedness. Almost three in ten respondents surveyed (28.6%) found that ‘surrounding yourself with positive people and things’ was a fantastic way to keep positive. Over a quarter of UK women surveyed said that being nice to others typically made them feel positive (27%).
Positivity doesn’t just benefit you, it can also help those around you. As many as 22.5% of women believed that staying positive improved their personal relationships with others.
Clothing and Positivity
It seems that positivity isn’t just a mind-set though. An impressive 82% of respondents said that clothing impacts how positive they feel.
That’s not all. Almost four in 10 (38%) women said wearing clothes that make them look great typically makes them feel the most positive. Nearly half of women surveyed said that new clothes usually give them a positive feeling (48%). This was followed by fresh clean sheets (42%) and fresh, clean clothes (35%).

The Benefits of Staying Positive
Staying positive is about more than just wearing a smile. Many of the women we spoke to believe that a positive outlook has real benefits.
Over 60% of those polled said that staying positive helped reduce their stress and anxiety. Over half (56%) believed that positivity led to them feeling happier.
On the other hand, the most commonly reported barrier to positivity was negative thinking (43%), followed by negative people (40%), lack of confidence (21.4%) and fear of failure (21.3%).
